TarascoHistory
Tarasco is the name given to the Purepecha people by the Spanish conquistadors. Native to the area that now has become the state of Michoacán. Some of the main virtues from the Purepecha culture are, without a doubt pottery, clay statue and advanced metallurgy. Although the Purepecha people now profess the Catholic religion, they have not lost their mystic orientation to celebrate their traditions and they still speak their own native language.
Danza de los Viejitos is said to have begun a dance in the Purepecha region. The men that perform this dance are know as “Danzantes” or “Dancers”. This was danced by the Perpecha people with four men to represent fire, water, earth & air. Also, there are four dancers in this traditional performance because there are four colors that make corn which is red, yellow, white & blue. The dancers ask him for good harvest, communication with spirits and learn about the past or to predict the future.
